Review: “I Did It His Way” by Johnny Hart
July 29, 2013 - Author: Bernadette Saddik - No Comments“Prayer is allowing God to have His will in your life on HIS terms.” -Johnny Hart
Thus opens this book which carries beautiful words of wisdom packaged in a way so many can relate. The humor in these pages is neither forced nor flat. “Wiley’s Dictionary” definitions, like those on page 119, naturally jump from the page into your laughter.
God is a God of joy, and Hart captures this trait well as he hits the nail on the head on concepts with which many struggle. For instance, the conversation on page 19 about God’s presence in our lives occurs in many’s lives.
Sometimes when we don’t have the words, imagery conveys the message. Take page 49, with very little dialogue–it speaks volumes. Yes, paying attention to the details is as important in reading cartoons as it is in real life!
Using the benefit of a comic strip, Hart projects many human worries and their solutions through imaginary figures. The turtle and living water sequence (as strange as those words sound!) is one of my favourite empowering strips of the book.
A mix between gently communicated sobering truths and plain hilarious puns, I Did His Way is an uplifting, easy read for anyone.
Hart was a cartoonist who later in life accepted Christ. He used his gift as an illustrator to encourage others through his comics.
